The Living Planet Aquarium in SLC, Utah

The Living Planet Aquarium, located in Salt Lake City, Utah, is a small but growing aquarium.  For the price (less than $10 for adults), this is one of the best aquariums I’ve seen, and it costs less than seeing a movie at some theaters!

Unlike many aquariums that feature sharks, the freshwater electric eel steals the show around the holidays.  During the month of December, the aquarium uses the electricity generated by the eel to power blinking holiday lights on a tree.  View the video here.

The aquarium features a rather nice children’s play area with tanks closer to the ground, “Nemo”, and a giant ship room for birthday parties.

Fish of Utah were also featured in various displays.  As a scuba diver, I appreciated being able to finally identified some of the freshwater fish I’ve seen.

The freshwater planted tanks were quite beautiful with the plants waving in the water and neon tetras darting about.

Of course, the penguin display was a ton of fun to watch.  The penguins loved to dive into the water, and some even took a quick break to model for photos.

The only disappointing aspect of the aquarium was the size of the shark reef viewing area.  It was limited to just a small area, and during shark feeding, it was nearly impossible to see the sharks.

Although the shark reef was small, the “macro” life more than made up for it.  Enjoy the photos!
